Introducing OpenEdge 10.2A
New features and enhancements will increase productivity
These days, managing corporate data is no easy feat, regardless of your business size. Corporate compliance, government regulations, and the demands of the economy are just a few drivers contributing to the increase of data proliferation. You need a robust technology platform that will enable you to scale and manage your business as it is confronted with complex data management issues.
The Progress® OpenEdge® 10.2A platform is standards-based, integrated, and capable of building, running, and managing service oriented business applications. OpenEdge is based on this simple premise: business applications must be easy to construct, easy to enhance, and require minimal resources to operate. There are many new enhancements and features that are included in the release of OpenEdge 10.2A, specifically in these three areas:
Platform enhancements
OpenEdge 10.2A reinforces our theme of openness by offering:
- An industry-standard .NET front end right out of the box: The new OpenEdge GUI for .NET provides a standard, contemporary look and feel while being powered by our state of the art Advanced Business Language (ABL).
- Advancing our SOA offering: This includes improved handle methods for reading and writing XML with ProDataSets, thus helping to reduce file sizes and ease network congestion.
Development enhancements
We continue to increase the productivity of our development tools by enhancing the OpenEdge Architect (OEA) with:
- A new Visual Designer: Allows you to visually create the UI from OpenEdge Architect. It provides a WYSIWYG editor for building applications providing drag-and-drop support for .NET controls onto a design canvas, as well as a property grid for associating events and controlling properties.
- An extension of class browser support for .NET classes: Alllows you to see details about all your .NET resources, namespaces and types. These details come from the assemblies that are associated with the workspace and are also available for any external resources you add to the Class Browser.
ABL Editor changes: In 10.2A, the ABL Editor includes a number of productivity enhancements including certain associated wizards and dialogs, new views and UI features.
Operations and management enhancements
We continue to improve our efficiency by eliminating migration barriers and streamlining object reuse. For example, 10.2A support includes:
- An updated OpenEdge Adapter for SonicMQ
- Connection file support has been expanded to include a number of additional connection type parameters.
- Connect ID support has also been improved with a pair of new APIs.
- An enhanced DataServer for Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server
- Support has been added for the datetime data type in the DataServer for Oracle and Microsoft SQL Server.
- Also, support is now available for the CLOB data type in the DataServer for Oracle.
- ABL and object-oriented programming enhancements
- A number of new features have been incorporated including support for accessing .NET objects, creating and using .NET forms and controls, .NET type and resource management and error handling, automatic garbage collection, and array enhancements.
